Preceptorship at the George Eliothas developed and evolved over the past four years. There is now a dedicated practice facilitator team responsible for nurse education not only supporting the preceptors (newly qualified registrants) but also new-to-trust qualified nurses.

Support is provided with education and training but also being available in the clinical areas to work alongside/shadow the member of staff. The numbers of preceptors has grown as we have developed the Preceptorship Service and feedback received has been positive.

The change in the way that the Trust recruits staff has also changed and we now have monthly recruitment days which are attracting a healthy numbers of candidates.

The Trust recruits staff using the values of the Trust and the vision for nursing as a basis for the day. Recruitment days consist of:

  • Welcome to the Trust - HR documentation
  • Maths test
  • Scenario based problem
  • Individual interview
  • Tour of the site

For those recruited to the Trust, the first week of employment consists of the Trust corporate induction. The Preceptor workshops follow in the second week, with two days of training and the rest in their area of work. The workshops are then held again in the third week.

Examples of Topics covered:

  • Deteriorating patients
  • Documentation
  • Acute kidney injury & Fluid balance recording
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Electronic Discharge and Review (bloods) system
